Wow, 6 weeks, already? Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?! So, indeed I have now been Sales Director at Pangea for a full 6 weeks and it already feels like home. In my video interview with our MD, Dan Cunliffe, a few weeks ago (thanks for all the views & positive comments), I said that the culture of a potential employer was very important to me. Already I know I have made the right decision in joining Pangea, the buzz about the place is incredible and the feeling of “we’re all in this together” is truly inspiring.
As you may know, I joined Pangea after 11 years at a UK mobile network operator. The transition from a very large company to a smaller business was something I was initially a little nervous about. After joining, the first great thing I noticed was how close I was to our customers, right at the forefront of our business driving our sales process. With far fewer people in between me and the customer I felt I was in control and really able to affect the experience delivered and ultimately the outcome of the sale.
I have found I have much more input into decisions. I can make those decisions quickly and see the positive impact of change almost immediately. Smaller businesses are fortunate not to have many departments with often conflicting objectives—instead it feels like one big team all striving to achieve the same thing. With Pangea being a channel only business, our Partners directly benefit from our agility. We can quickly react to new trends in the market and bespoke opportunities, perhaps much more quickly than a large network operator could.
Whilst there are undeniable benefits of working for a larger organisation, you are essentially a small part of something overwhelmingly large, and you can sometimes feel a little lost in the crowd. You can potentially be pigeon-holed into a specific type of role, meaning that there can be really exciting things happening all around you, but you are only asked to get involved to deliver against your specific area of expertise. At Pangea, we feel involved in the whole company, not just a part of it. As a consequence we all have a great understanding of how our business operates across departments, instead of the typical pockets of expertise you may find in a large corporate entity. This really benefits our Partners as they often give us very positive feedback about how our team has a very joined up approach—it feels seamless whether dealing with Sales, Operations or Customer Support.
Choosing the size of your employer is just as important as the job itself. I have found that Pangea truly matches my work style, personality, and needs more than any large company could. Is it a coincidence that I have discovered this in my 40th year on this planet? Maybe not—our preferences change as we enter different stages of our lives and careers, and I guess now was just the time for me to make the change. But how is this relevant when choosing an IoT Solution Partner to collaborate with? Well firstly, you don’t want to wait 40 years to make the right decision! Size does matter, and I consider Pangea to be big enough to support your every requirement but small enough to care.
But don’t just take my word for it. With a combined 55 years of experience in partnering and collaboration within the telecommunications industry, we’re the channel’s choice for IoT, specialising in global M2M and IoT connectivity, devices, and solutions. In the past two years, Pangea has won Best Enterprise Mobile Data Solution at Comms National Awards, and Tech Innovation of the year at Kingston Business Excellence Awards, as well as being shortlisted for 11 other awards. We are also excited to have been named a finalist in the upcoming Comms Business Awards 2017 for Best IoT/M2M Provider, whilst our Partner Programme has been nominated for Best Partner Programme in the CRN Sales and Marketing Awards. Wish us luck!
