Digital Divide
Especially for schools, who’ve got the colossal task of preparing the next generation to navigate a digital world.
But many communities suffering from the worldwide digital divide (including in the UK) lack the devices, infrastructure, and expertise to equip their students with the computing skills they need.
It’s a big problem. Computer Aid is tackling it.
And this year, we’re supporting them with their ambitious goal that hits very close to home.
So far they’ve delivered over 260,000 computers to schools and community centres in over 100 countries, having helped over 14.5 million people and provided 1 billion hours of learning.
Their devices are making a huge difference. But they don’t stop there.
Computer Aid also sets up pop-up computer labs that are both portable and sustainable, being built into shipping containers and decked out with solar panels.
And if a school in a developing country hasn’t got internet access, Computer Aid provides a local network full of educational content through their Connect device, complete with digital textbooks, Youtube tutorials, storybooks, and more.
Lastly, if a school’s staff haven’t had experience with computers or the internet, Computer Aid will train and certify them so that they’re equipped to pass on essential IT skills and knowledge to their students.
Their story is closely aligned with our own mission to connect everything. We’re playing a role in creating the digital world of today and tomorrow; so we want the generations to come to embrace that world, and reap all of the benefits that come with it.
And it all starts with education.
Whether it’s desktops, tablets, or mobile phones, if you’ve got tech that’s going unused, please consider donating it to Computer Aid.
It’s a great cause, and they do great work, but they rely on donations to do it; so get involved if you can!
If you’re local to Kingston-Upon-Thames, or you’re looking for a school to give back to this Christmas, consider sending a donation their way to help put top tech in their IT labs, enable creative art and music projects, send students on school trips, and more.
Joanna Hoffman, the school’s Treasurer, said they were grateful for our donation. ‘The funds will go towards vital enrichment activities for the school, with IT equipment being on a top priority list. We thank Pangea for their generous support at this difficult time.’
So the Salvation Army have teamed up with a leading UK retailer to give presents to children who need them the most this year.
They’re matching toy donations as part of their Big Toy Appeal; so if your little one’s outgrown their favourite toys or you’d like to brighten up Christmas for families that need it, head over to their site for more details.
Mind is a charity that focuses on supporting mental wellbeing; whether it’s by raising awareness, campaigning to improve the quality of mental health services, or providing info on choices and rights when it comes to treatment and support.
This year we’re donating to a local arm of the charity, Mind in Kingston who provide a whole host of services within our local community.
We encourage anyone who might be struggling to pick up the phone. And if you’d like to donate to support the exceptional work Mind in Kingston does, you can do so here.
